What to do in León?

León offers a wide range of activities for visitors to explore. Here are some of the top things to do in León, Nicaragua:

Catedral de León is the main attraction of the city and you will pass by this amazing construction numerous times during your stay in León. Do take time out to explore the interior of this grand cathedral and buy tickets to explore the cathedral’s roof. If you don’t want shadows on your photos from up on the roof, try visiting when the sun is at its highest. Tickets can be bought at the back of the church, in front of the Mercado Central. The entrance is on the side of the José de Marcoleta street.

Visit the Museum of the Revolution and learn about Nicaragua’s revolutionary history, housed in the former headquarters of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). 

Discover contemporary Nicaraguan art at the Ortiz-Gurdián Art Foundation. The museum is located in two colonial-era buildings, which is worth a visit in its own right. Inside you’ll find paintings, sculptures, and other artwork by local and international artists. 

Did you know that there is a León Viejo? It is the original location of the city before it was relocated due to volcanic activity. Nowadays you can still visit the ruins of León Viejo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to get to León?

Getting to León, Nicaragua, is quite straightforward, given its popularity as a tourist destination and its well-established transportation connections. Normally you will go to León via Managua. From there the journey via the Pan-American Highway should take 1,5 to 2 hours. Here are several common methods to reach León:

By Taxi or Private Transfer: you can opt for a taxi or arrange a private transfer from Managua to León. Although pricier than other modes of transport, taxis and private transfers offer the convenience of door-to-door service and flexible scheduling. Travelers can negotiate fares directly with drivers or organize transfers through their accommodation or local tour agencies.

By Shuttle: Certain hotels and tour companies in Nicaragua provide shuttle services between major cities, including Managua and León. These shuttles offer comfortable, door-to-door service in air-conditioned vehicles. If León is your first destination after arriving in Nicaragua, you should inquire about shuttle options and availability with your accommodation or local tour agencies. By Air: From the international airport in Managua, you can catch a domestic flight to León’s domestic airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Las Mercedes (LEN). Local airlines like La Costeña and Atlantic Airlines operate flights between Managua and León, typically lasting about 30 minutes.

By Bus: León is well-linked to other Nicaraguan cities via an extensive bus network. From Managua, direct buses to León depart from the Mercado Roberto Huembes bus terminal.
